What is God's Will for Me?

God’s will is a highly debatable topic, am I right?

Personally, we may ask, who should I marry? What career do I choose? What school should I attend? Should I buy this house or the other house or wait all together? In all of these life decisions, both big and small, we can deliberate ourselves into a frenzy over which the Lord would have us choose.

In this series, we’re going to discuss what Scripture has to say about God’s will and how, by leaning into these truths, we can find peace and confidence in our decisions.

Today, we’re going to start with 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, the first verse that likely popped into your mind (as well as mine) when thinking about God’s will.

“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Despite this being a short and relatively simple verse, it is packed with heavy, difficult commands.

-Rejoice always. As in always. All the time, about everything. Of course, it’s not easy, but we must remember, Jesus didn’t promise following Him would be easy. (John 16:33)

-Pray continually. As in, all the time. Without ceasing. While it’s impossible to constantly be on-bended-knee, we can have a spirit of prayer when our heart is in the full presence of God (Pulpit commentary).

-Give thanks in all circumstances. Some situations are exceedingly difficult to give thanks (or rejoice) but I do believe, as I’ve heard in many testimonies, that God gives us grace and mercy in our time of need, and our spirit is filled with thanks regardless of our circumstances because of the one constant—our Father.

Living out this verse is definitely not easy, but so worth it. Aligning our hearts through the power of the Holy Spirit in praise, thanks, and prayer is never time wasted. God is a good Father who gives us good gifts, namely giving Jesus in our place on the cross. If we can find nothing else to rejoice over or give thanks about, we can always look to the cross.

How has God used this verse in your life? Can you recall a time when rejoicing, giving thanks, or praying continually was difficult, but you chose to anyways?
