A Beautiful Thing

Today we’re wrapping up our study of the woman, identified by John in his account as Mary the sister of Lazarus, who poured oil on Jesus while He was in Bethany for Passover.

The last thought I’ll leave with you, today, Good Friday, is that it is believed by Bible scholars that the timing of Mary pouring the oil on Jesus was significant. This oil, which was very costly and fragrant, would’ve remained on Jesus’ body for days. It is likely that as Jesus was carrying the cross to Golgotha, through the crowded streets, and as He passed, this fragrance filled the air around Him and followed Him as he went. Isn’t that something beautiful to ponder?

When Mary poured the oil on His head, she was doing “what she could” and Jesus called it “a beautiful thing” in two of the gospel accounts. Jesus pointed out that she was preparing Him for burial. A commentary I read made the connection between Old Testament kings being anointed by oil before taking the throne which is another interesting connection here. Jesus was entering the grave on Friday, but on Sunday He rolled the stone away and came out as the King of Kings.

How can we follow Mary? How is God nudging your heart in worship or deed?

Thanks for being here and happy Good Friday!
