David was the youngest son of Jesse. When God told Samuel to go to the house of Jesse and select from among his sons a new king for Israel, Jesse didn't even fetch David from the field for the visit! Although Jesse didn't see kingly potential in his youngest child, God did. David would go on to be one of Israel's most beloved and relatable kings, even earning the title, "A man after God's own heart." And this title was given after his adultery with Bathsheba. David is perhaps most remembered for facing the giant, Goliath, with only a slingshot and five stones. I love his response in this passage after Goliath smack-talked David, the Israelites, and God. Despite our sin, God uses common, ordinary people like David, you and me to accomplish His will and purposes. He doesn't need us, but like a good Father, He invites us along to share in the blessing. What mission has God invited you along lately?
