How can we overcome fear? Part two
Continuing from last week, we pick up with thoughts on moving forward when we are struck with fear:
1. Seek peace. The Bible tells us that Jesus says, “My peace I leave you. My peace I give you. I do not give as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled. Do not be afraid” John 14:27. Peace is a person. It’s Jesus (Eph 2:15). We’ve already discussed that He is with us and promises to never leave us. So, lean in to Jesus. He is peace. In Colossians 3 verse 15, it also says to let peace rule in your hearts. With the help of the Holy Spirit, we can choose peace over fear.
2. Fear God instead. Ecclesiastes 12:13 says to fear God and keep His commandments for this is the whole duty of man. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 1:7). Choose to fear the Lord and not that mountain in front of you—or whatever it is that has you paralyzed.
3. Let love reign. This is a great segue into next month’s series on love. First John 14 verse 18 says, “Perfect love casts out fear…The one who fears is not made in perfect love.” We know that God loves us with a perfect love. This should give us confidence. Zephaniah 3:17 says it well, “The Lord your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.” Wow. Isn’t our God good?
So, what fear has you entangled today? Do you need prayer?
We can take our fear to our Father because He knows them already. He cares about them, and He’s asking us to bring them to Him. He already knows what the outcome will be for whatever it is that you fear. He’s a good Dad. He loves you. Take your fears to Him. Cast them at His feet and ask for peace. Peace is a person—it’s Jesus. And He keeps those in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on him (Isaiah 26:3).
