Happy Friday!
In this July series, we’ll be looking at what Jesus has to say about love and try to understand why it’s so important.
In Mark 12:28, Jesus addresses a teacher of the law who asked Him which of all the commandments was most important. Jesus answers him by mentioning two commandments, one from Deuteronomy 6:5, and the other from Leviticus 19:18. Both had to do with love.
Of all the commandments for Jesus to mention here, why do you think He chose two specifically focusing on love? From this encounter alone, we can know for sure that love is important to God.
1 John 4:16, tells us that God is love. Not that He’s like love, or that He is loving (which He is), but that He is actually love itself. What a sweet thing to ponder.
We also know that love was God’s reason for sending Jesus to die in our place (John 3:16). Love is also the only thing that remains once we arrive in heaven. Paul says in I Corinthians 13:13, “So now faith, hope and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” Why is love the greatest? Because our faith will be realized when we’re face to face with Jesus, and we won’t need hope either. Love is the greatest because it remains forever.
Jesus says something powerful in this Mark encounter. He says that all that commandments were given for two simple reasons: to help us love God and love others.
Which of these verses strikes a chord with you? Why do you believe love is important?
