How did God use Jesus’ suffering?
Part Two
Last week, we looked at part one, listing the first four ways John Piper details on his website, Desiringgod.org under the sermon titled, “The suffering of Christ and the sovereignty of God.” Here's part two:
5. He disarmed Satan—and He did by suffering.
Colossians 2:14-15, ““[The record of debts against us] he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.” Jesus disarmed Satan by destroying the one power he could use to destroy us—our record of sin. As John Piper stated in the sermon article, “Satan has only one weapon that can damn to hell. Unforgiven sin. This weapon Christ stripped from Satan’s hand on the cross. This is the glory of grace, and it could only come by suffering.”
6. Christ purchased perfect and final healing for all people—and he did it by suffering.
Revelations 7:17, “The Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”
Isaiah 53:5, “Upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed.”
7.Christ will bring us finally to God—and He did it by suffering.
1 Peter3:18, “Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God.”
Which of the final three accomplishments of Jesus through suffering speaks most to you? What are your thoughts on suffering?
