How to Pray for Others

Happy Friday!

Before we dive into how we should pray for others next week, today, let’s consider the purpose of prayer and when we should pray. This is not a deep dive into prayer, just a refresher!

What is the purpose of prayer?

Prayer at its most basic form is talking to God. Prayer is our way of communicating with God and fellowshipping with Him.

Other places in Scripture describe prayer as:

-Seeking God’s favor (Exodus 32:11)

-Pouring out one’s soul to the Lord (1 Samuel 1:15)

-Crying out to heaven (2 Chronicles 32:20)

-Drawing near to God (Psalm 73:28)

-Kneeling before the Father (Ephesians 3:14).

What should we pray to God about? To sum it up, everything! Philippians 4:6-7, one of my go-to verses states, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer in supplication, with thanksgiving, let your request be made known to God and the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” This verse is packed with so much goodness.

-Be anxious for nothing is a command.

-In everything, pray.

-A promise is woven into this verse. When we go to the Lord and make our requests, His peace will guard our hearts and minds. This is accomplished through the power of Jesus.

When should we pray? Well, 1 Thessalonians 5:17, makes it clear. We are to, “pray without ceasing.” A running conversation with God throughout the day displays our trust and dependency on Him.

The goal of prayer isn’t to get what we want but to grow closer to God. Fellowship through prayer should grow our faith in Him and His goodness.

This doesn’t scratch the surface of the topic of prayer, but it’s a start. What has God taught you about prayer?
