Happy Friday!
Welcome to chapter three of 1 John. We’ll be highlighting and discussing a few verses that stood out to me. Comment below which verses stood out to you! I’d love to read how God spoke to you through your reading.
1 John chapter 3 verse:
1—Look, see what kind of love the Father has given to us that we should be called His children.
1—“and so we are.” And so we are His children. John speaks with such finality here. There is no guessing about it. We are God’s children. John refers to his readers in two beautiful endearments, “Little children” and “Beloved” which means “be loved.”
2—“Beloved” again, John is reminding us of who we are. As God’s children, we are loved.
4—“Practice”- a repetitive choice in behavior; a habit; a way of doing something. Practice is repeated 5 times in this chapter.
5—Why did Jesus come? To take away sin; and in verse 8, to destroy the works of the Devil.
9—“Born of God” a wonderful idea to ponder.
14—How do we know if we’re in the Spirit? We love others.
18—We cannot love in word alone (or in our hearts and minds only), we must express our love with action. We must show our love.
19—Here John gives us a test. We can test our hearts and our ways to see if we are in the faith. This testing gives us assurance.
20—John understood that sometimes our hearts condemn us when God doesn’t. We can be plagued with guilt when Jesus’ blood has declared us clean. But God is greater than even our hearts. John is giving us such sweet hope and assurance here.
24—How do we know He abides in us? By His Spirit. We can ask ourselves these questions to see if the Spirit abides within us.
We could likely turn a single verse into a whole series! There are so many good ones in this chapter. Which verses stood out most to you?
