Whatever is true, honorable...

Philippians 4:8 is towards the end of this book written by Paul and verse 8 is one of his final thoughts. He wants to give us a list of what our minds should be thinking about, and based on the previous verses, he provided this list to replace where our minds tend to hover, which is over anxiety and worry.

Let’s consider what is true:

-Truth is ultimately thinking about Jesus. As He said in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.”

-I think it’s also important to remember that Scripture is truth. When we are in doubt about anything, we can turn to Scripture and trust that it contains the truth we are seeking.

Honorable, also defined as noble:

-lofty, majestic, awesome things

-things that lift the mind above the world’s filth

Remember this: Our thoughts are powerful and the words we speak to ourselves can often carry more weight than what others say about us. If we’re constantly tearing our own efforts down, especially when we are thinking internally critical thoughts, we are still not viewing ourselves the way God views us. If we are in Christ, then we are clothed in His righteousness. Our sins have been forgiven and Psalm 103:12 tells us that God has removed our sins as far as the east is from the west.

Last thought: My pastor, Joby Martin, used to say that humility isn’t thinking less of yourself, it is thinking of yourself less. When we fix our eyes on others and on following after Jesus, there is less time to sit around and think about ourselves—thinking less about ourselves is always a good thing.
