Whatever is excellent or worthy of praise...

Happy Friday!

In this series, we are taking a deep dive into Philippians 4:8, and this week we are focusing on the words excellent and praiseworthy from Paul’s list.

Let’s consider what is excellent:

-what is best in every area of life

-the philosophical good for which every person should strive

Let’s consider what is praiseworthy:

-deserving of praise

To take Philippians 4:8 as a whole, we can sum up Paul’s list of virtues as a catalog that reflects the best life a person can live and the best reputation a person can achieve in community. After listing these virtues, Paul urges us to think about them. Here they are:

-true

-noble

-right

-just

-pure

-lovely

-admirable

-excellent

-praiseworthy

Why do you believe Paul recommends these virtues particularly?

I read a commentary suggesting that thinking about these virtues, along with prayer will relieve all anxiety and lead us to praise God and live life the way he intended.

I find that when I pray the following verse, it helps to relieve anxiety and fear. “Be anxious for nothing, instead through prayer and petition present your requests before God and the peace of God which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”

What are some examples of things that are excellent or praiseworthy? How do you take your thoughts captive to obedience in Christ in your daily life? I’d love to see what works for you! How do you shift from negative thoughts, worries, or fears to peace and trust in Jesus? Please comment below!
