It's Good Friday and it's good for only one reason. Today, 2,000 years after the fact, we can look back to the cross, understand all that Jesus accomplished for us on Golgotha, and celebrate His death, burial, and resurrection.
Jesus spoke seven last words on the cross before He chose to give up His spirit.
These statements made by Jesus are some of the most treasured in Scripture. They demonstrate His humanity and His divinity and capture the final moments of suffering He endured to gain our forgiveness.
"Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." Luke 23:34
"I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise." Luke 23:43
Speaking to Mary and John: "Dear woman, here is your son... Here is your mother." John 19:26, 27
"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Matthew 27:46; Mark 15:34
"I am thirsty." John 19:28
"It is finished." John 19:30
"Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." Luke 23:46
Which statement speaks to you the most?
"It is finished" might be mine. It is such a powerful statement encompassing all that Jesus accomplished for us with His death.
What a terrifying and hopeless Friday and Saturday the disciples and early followers must have faced. What do you believe they might have been thinking or feeling between the crucifixion on Friday and the empty tomb on Sunday?
