The Science of Story

Research has proven we are all hardwired for stories. Stories speak to our hearts in ways that facts, data, and charts simply can’t.

In Jennifer Rothschild’s Bible study, Amos: an Invitation to the Good Life, @jennrothschild quotes research from, “The Science of Stories: How Stories Impact our Brain”, stating that the neural activity in our brain increases up to fivefold when you get information from a story over presented facts. She goes on to say, “Neurons that fire together, wire together. In other words, when your brain is so lit up by a story, you tend to take it in and remember the facts it represents much better.” Isn’t that amazing!

.

.

A beautiful and also heartbreaking example of this can be found in 2 Samuel 12. The prophet Nathan uses the power of story to uncover King David’s sin and the result is David’s immediate repentance.

.

Jesus taught in parables and so much of the Old Testament is told in story form.

.

Jennifer gives a humbling call, “You and I have the privilege of being ambassadors of God’s truth in this world. We not only need to hear and heed His truth for our lives, but we must be the truth storytellers for this world.”

.

As a writer, this is exactly what I want to be doing and am so blessed by our writer community and those locking arms with me in this storytelling journey.
