After the resurrection, Jesus didn't immediately return to heaven. He stayed on the earth for 40 days and appeared to many of His followers and others. The last thing Jesus said before the ascension into heaven is found in Acts 1. I would encourage you to read the whole chapter, but Jesus speaks in verse 4 and again in verse 7 about the Holy Spirit coming upon believers and the power He brings. Jesus says in verse 7 of Acts 1, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
The verses in Acts correlate with this verse in Matthew called The Great Commission. He charged believers then, just as He charges us today to continue to make disciples and to do this as we go--as we go about our daily lives with the circles around us and on mission trips. For most of us, making disciples starts right at home with our children!
