“Follow your heart”
This quote makes me laugh. I hear it often in movies and on TV shows, and from well-meaning friends and family who haven’t made the Scripture connection yet.
Jeremiah 17:9, “The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately sick; who can understand it?”
Wow. If we were looking for a warm and fuzzy verse to put on our coffee mug, this isn’t the one!
It’s actually a bad idea to follow our hearts? I think the idea behind the quote is to do what feels good or what makes you happy, but again, we won’t find that advice in Scripture. Jesus tells us in Matthew 16:24, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” A much greater joy can be found in surrender and obedience to our Lord and Savior, than to following our own wants, desires, and perceived wisdom. We can always trust that the same God who didn’t spare His own son for our salvation is also working all things for our good. (Romans 8:28)
What are your thoughts on the quote, “Follow your heart”?
