A Well-Tended Garden

Do any of you plant a garden in your yard?

Sometimes I wish we did, but I’m spoiled because my father-in-law plants a huge garden every year.

When I was dating my now husband, I would go and help in the garden in the summer. He grows a plethora of vegetables and everyone he knows benefits from his labor. He gives much of his garden produce away—aren’t we blessed! He grows bell peppers, zipper peas, pink-eye purple-hull peas, squash, potatoes, hundreds of tomatoes, rows and rows of corn, green beans, cantaloupe, the best watermelons, okra, cucumbers, muscadines, and others I know I’m forgetting.

He very sweetly attempts to plant pumpkins for me in July but in our past efforts it’s been too wet for them to develop.

In my time in the garden, we pulled hundreds of ears of corn. We shucked them, silked them, and cut them off. I’ve shelled my fair share of peas in the front of the TV as well. He usually begins getting his fields ready and planting his first seeds around this time. Some years a cold frost will come later than expected and kill the root, and he will replant. Other years, the weather remains warm enough and his seeds flourish.

I really only see the garden when it has taken its full shape and the plants are blooming with their fruit. But I know he gets up early before work and weeds, and he’s back out in the garden when he returns home. I can only imagine the hours he spends tending to and nurturing the plants. His garden is his place of solitude. He listens to gospel music and spends his time with the Lord in prayer while he works.

Our “Pop” tends to his garden with diligence and constant care, and it yields an abundant harvest that blesses all those around him. How are you tending to your “garden”?

Jesus teaches a parable about soil in Mark 4 and Luke 8, and how it mirrors our hearts. We’ll look further into that over the next two weeks.

What are you planting in your actual garden? Do you have any gardening tales?
